Everyone tells you to visit Halong Bay in October. The weather guides say autumn. The travel blogs say peak season. And they are not wrong — October is beautiful. But here is what nobody tells you: summer on Halong Bay is when the bay comes alive. This comprehensive guide on summer halong bay cruise covers everything you need to know.
We are the crew of Cozy Bay Grand, and we operate in every season. May through August is our favorite time on the water. Here is why.
The Light Is Different
Summer light on Halong Bay is not like any other season. When it comes to summer halong bay cruise, this section provides key insights. The sun sits higher, the days stretch longer, and the golden hour — that magical window before sunset — lasts nearly an hour instead of the thirty minutes you get in winter.
At 5:00 PM in July, the sundeck of Cozy Bay Grand is bathed in warm, amber light that photographers dream about. The karsts glow. The water turns from emerald to liquid gold. And because the sun sets later (around 6:45 PM compared to 5:30 PM in December), you have more time to enjoy it. More time on the sundeck. More time with your drink. More time watching the bay transform.
The crew has a saying: October gives you the postcard. Summer gives you the painting.
The Storms Are Spectacular
Yes, it rains in summer. Typically between 2:00 and 3:00 PM, a thunderstorm builds over the karsts, rolls across the bay, and delivers 30-60 minutes of dramatic rain. Then it stops. The sky clears. And the sunset that follows is often the most extraordinary of the entire year.
Post-storm sunsets on Halong Bay are legendary among photographers and crew members alike. The rain washes the air clean, removes the haze, and creates contrast between retreating dark clouds and incoming golden light that no filter can replicate.
“We came in July expecting grey skies and disappointment. Instead, we got a thunderstorm that lasted 40 minutes, followed by the most insane sunset either of us had ever seen. The sky was purple, orange, and pink simultaneously. Every single person on the sundeck was silent. It was religious.” — Tom & Clara, 32 & 29, Australia
Fewer Boats, More Bay
Summer is Halong Bay’s shoulder season. The tourist volume drops by 30-40 percent compared to October-November peak. On Cozy Bay Grand, we still sail at capacity most weekends, but midweek cruises in June and July often have 20-25 guests instead of the full 36.
What does this mean for you?
At Sung Sot Cave: In peak season, you share the cave with 300-500 visitors at the same time slot. In summer, that number drops to 50-100. The cave feels personal rather than processed. You can actually pause, look up, and absorb the 400-million-year-old stalactites without being pushed forward by a crowd.
At Titov Island: The beach has space. The summit trail has breathing room. The viewpoint at the top — arguably the finest panorama in all of Halong Bay — is yours to enjoy without jostling for a photo position.
On the Water: Fewer day boats means quieter water during kayaking at Luon Cave. The hidden lagoon beyond the cave feels genuinely hidden. The only sounds are your paddle, dripping water, and birdsong echoing off the cave walls.
The Water Is Warm
From June through August, the water temperature in Halong Bay reaches 28-30 degrees Celsius. Swimming at Titov Island beach is genuinely comfortable — not the teeth-chattering experience of a December dip.
For kayakers, warm water means relaxed paddling. If your paddle drips on your legs, it is refreshing rather than shocking. If you accidentally splash your partner (accidentally, of course), nobody complains.
Summer Activities Hit Different
Every activity on the Cozy Bay Grand itinerary is available year-round. But summer transforms several of them:
Morning Tai Chi (6:00 AM): The sunrise comes early in summer — around 5:15 AM. By the time tai chi begins on the sundeck, the bay is already bright, the air is warm, and the mist has a golden quality that winter tai chi simply cannot match. You practice in shorts and a t-shirt instead of wrapped in a blanket.
Squid Fishing (9:00 PM): Summer squid are more active in warmer water. The catch rates in July and August are consistently higher than any other season. The crew will not guarantee a catch — squid answer to no one — but your odds are better in summer.
Sundeck Evening: In October, the sundeck empties by 8:00 PM because the temperature drops to 18-20 degrees. In summer, the sundeck at 10:00 PM is 26 degrees, gently breezy, and perfect for lying on a lounger under the stars with a drink in hand. This is when the best conversations happen — when people stop going inside because there is no reason to.
Cooking Class: The sundeck cooking class at 4:30 PM in summer benefits from natural ventilation and warm air. Rolling spring rolls in a gentle sea breeze, with the bay stretching behind you, is one of those moments that makes you think: this is what vacation is supposed to feel like.

The Honest Downsides
We believe in honesty, so here is what summer is not:
Visibility is lower. Autumn’s crystal-clear skies offer the sharpest views. Summer haze can reduce long-distance visibility, though close-range karst views are unaffected.
It is hot. Temperatures reach 32-35 degrees during midday. Outdoor activities between noon and 2:00 PM are less comfortable. (Fortunately, lunch is served indoors during this window.)
Rain is possible. Not guaranteed, but probable. One to two hours of rain per day is typical. If you are the type of traveler who needs guaranteed blue sky, October is your month.
Typhoon risk exists. June through September carries a small risk of typhoon disruption. If the maritime authority issues a warning, cruises are cancelled with full refund. This affects approximately 5-8 days per year.
Who Summer Is Perfect For
- Photographers chasing dramatic post-storm light
- Budget-conscious travelers who want peak experience at shoulder-season pricing
- Families with school-age children whose vacation falls in July-August
- People who dislike crowds and want a more intimate bay experience
- Couples who value warm evening sundecks over cool autumn nights
The Summer Secret
Here is something the crew knows that the travel blogs do not: the guests who visit in summer are different. They are not the bucket-list travelers checking off Halong Bay between Angkor Wat and Bali. They are the travelers who researched, who read the weather reports, who decided to come anyway — and who are rewarded with a version of the bay that the peak-season crowds never see.
The mist. The storms. The light after the storms. The warm water. The empty caves. The long, golden evenings on a sundeck that never gets cold.
Summer on Halong Bay is not the postcard. It is the experience.
